About Us
Cleveland rocks – and long before Drew Carey and Ian Hunter made those words part of the pop lexicon, Scene was there to prove it. Founded in 1970 as a music publication, the paper was purchased by New Times in August 1998. The company immediately went about expanding Scene's editorial staff, hiring staff writers who've quickly made their mark both locally and nationally. In 1999, Scene took home prizes in prestigious national competitions such as the Investigative Reports and Editors contest, The National Society of Newspaper Columnists Awards and the Clarion Awards sponsored by the Association of Women in Communications. And at the Ohio SPJ awards banquet in September 2000, Scene staffers won more individual entries than any other newspaper in the state in their division. Cleveland's still rocking today, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame open for business a stone's throw from downtown ballparks that house the rejuvenated Indians and born-again Browns. Driving the region's urban renaissance is a community of young urban professionals hungry for smart, uncompromising civic journalism -- something Scene is perfectly positioned to provide.
